Hope, 2026 - ★★★★

This film was quite a surprise for me. All I knew was that it featured aliens, it was Korean, and that was about it. It turned out to be shockingly better than I expected and easily one of the most intense and exhilarating action movies I’ve seen in a while.

The action is the main highlight here, and it’s executed exceptionally well. The sequences feel tight, intense, and visceral, as if the film wants you to feel trapped in the chaos alongside the characters. The pressure never lets up, and that relentless intensity carries the entire movie.

Visually, the cinematography and camera work are impressive. The film looks far better than expected, especially considering potential budget constraints. The framing, camera movement, and overall look add more weight to the action.

But the real MVP of this movie, imo, is the musical score and the sound design. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen an action movie that consistently selects the perfect music for each scene. Usually, there’s at least one odd scoring choice that pulls me out of the story. Not here, though. The score fits the tone and emotions of each moment, and when the action kicks in, the score truly amps things up. Honestly, I could give this movie a thumbs up for the sound and score alone.

I’m usually not a fan of rapid cuts, but I didn’t mind them in this film. The pace and cutting style feel like they’re serving the energy of the scenes, and I get why the movie chose this approach. That said, trimming a few scenes could improve the story’s flow and slightly reduce the overall runtime.

One thing I didn’t fully love was the amount of humor.  I’m fine with jokes that break the tension and provide some breathing room, but “Hope” includes a lot of humor, with some jokes dragging on too long. The story itself is serious, so when the movie keeps dropping joke after joke, it can break the tone. At times, I found myself wondering whether this was an action sci-fi thriller film with comedic elements or a full-on comedy. The humor isn’t bad, it’s just a bit much to my liking. They could have trimmed them down, kept the jokes shorter, tightened things up, and it would be a much better film.

The biggest downside, though, is the story itself. The plot keeps throwing mysteries at you without offering real answers. And what annoyed me most is realizing this movie is basically a setup for a sequel, which might not even happen. I understand cliffhangers and the need to build a franchise, but I don’t understand why the first film couldn’t still deliver a complete storyline. If a sequel never happens, then we are left with numerous unanswered questions and little payoff.

Because when you strip it down, the story ends up feeling like: running, chasing, running, and more chasing, and that’s it. You don’t learn much beyond the fact that there are aliens involved. Even by action movie standards, the script feels rather thin. That doesn’t make the movie boring, though. It’s still entertaining because the filmmaking is doing so much heavy lifting.

So do I recommend “Hope”? Yes, especially if you enjoy action horror movies, action-comedy, and anything involving aliens. Just don’t go in expecting the mysteries to be resolved, because the movie clearly isn’t interested in answering them (yet).

Overall, I don’t completely love it because the story is lackluster, but the action and filmmaking are strong enough that I still say it’s worth watching. Fingers crossed we actually get a sequel, because if they finish what they started, this could turn into something special. However, if they don’t follow through with a sequel after all this setup, it’ll be genuinely disappointing.
